The worst computer viruses of all time

I got this interesting article from Yahoo! Tech.

If you haven't experienced a computer virus yet, just wait -- you probably will.

Fortunately, you missed the real heyday of computer viruses when anti-virus software wasn't very widely used, and virus attacks caused millions of dollars in damages overnight. Today's viruses can still be nightmarish, but for the average user, cleanup is considerably easier than it was just a few years ago, when the only solution in many cases was reformatting your hard drive and starting from scratch (and even that didn't do the trick sometimes).

So join me on a trip down memory lane as we revisit some of the worst viruses of all time and count our blessings that our computers are still up and running despite it all. (Though, please note, "worst" is a matter of considerable debate in the security industry, as the number of infected machines and amount of financial loss is always estimated. If you think another virus was worse than these, please post it in the comments to remind us!)

The worst viruses of all time

Brain, 1986
It all started here: Brain was the first "real" virus ever discovered, back in 1986. Brain didn't really hurt your PC, but it launched the malware industry with a bang and gave bad ideas to over 100,000 virus creators for the next 2 decades.

Michelangelo, 1991
The worst MS-DOS virus ever, Michelangelo attacked the boot sector of your hard drive and any floppy drive inserted into the computer, which caused the virus to spread rapidly. After spreading quietly for months, the virus "activated" on March 6, and promptly started destroying data on tens of thousands of computers.

Melissa, 1999
Technically a worm, Melissa (named after a stripper) collapsed entire email systems by causing computers to send mountains of messages to each other. The author of the virus was eventually caught and sentenced to 20 months in prison.

ILOVEYOU, 2000
This was notable for being one of the first viruses to trick users into opening a file, which in this case claimed to be a love letter sent to the recipient. In reality, the file was a VBS script that sent mountains of junk mail and deleted thousands of files. The results were terribly devastating- one estimate holds that 10 percent of all computers were affected, to a cost of $5.5 billion. It remains perhaps the worst worm of all time.

Code Red, 2001
An early "blended threat" attack, Code Red targeted Web servers instead of user machines, defacing websites and later launching denial-of-service attacks on a host of IP addresses, including those of the White House.

Nimda, 2001
Built on Code Red's attack system of finding multiple avenues into machines (email, websites, network connections, and others), Nimda infected both Web servers and user machines. It found paths into computers so effectively that, 22 minutes after it was released, it became the Internet's most widespread virus at the time.

Klez, 2001
An email virus, Klez pioneered spoofing the "From" field in email messages it sent, making it impossible to tell if Bill Gates did or did not really send you that information about getting free money.

Slammer, 2003
Another fast spreader, this worm infected about 75,000 systems in just 10 minutes, slowing the Internet to a crawl (much like Code Red) and shutting down thousands of websites.

MyDoom, 2004
Notable as the fastest-spreading email virus of all time, MyDoom infected computers so they would, in turn, send even more junk mail. In a strange twist, MyDoom was also used to attack the website of SCO Group, a very unpopular company that was suing other companies over its code being used in Linux distributions.

Storm, 2007
The worst recent virus, Storm spread via email spam with a fake attachment and ultimately infected up to 10 million computers, causing them to join its zombie botnet.

Back soon

Very soon on the 4th I'll be heading back to Kursk again.

I've missed quite a lot on the classes, missed out 2 weeks of study, aih, so I'd better work hard when I'm back there.

Speaking of the flight back to Kursk, I've done some calculation, practically it take around 16 hours on air alone, excluding the 8 hours train ride from Moscow- Kursk. Argh!! Tiring.

Flights are rather expensive, going on a high RM4000 for a return ticket. Bloody!

Anyways, if you book earlier through the net, you can always find cheap flights. Good luck with that.

Gotta go now, get back to watching my series.

Have you wondered?

Went through an article about male enhancement, seems so funny reading that.

Let me tell you how does the male enhancement work, practically L-Arginine, the main ingredient in it (L-Arginine HCL) is a semi-essential amino acid which focuses on improving male libido and increases levels of testosterone. Haha!

Penis extender, is the other name for it. The enhancement provides Bigger, harder and longer erections, Increase sperm product, Increase semen volume and More explosive orgasms. ^^

New Updates

Bush says he'll visit Russia after April NATO summit
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President George W. Bush announced on Wednesday he would visit Russia early next month for talks with President Vladimir Putin on strategic issues, including U.S. plans for a missile defense shield in Eastern Europe.

"I'm going to go to Russia," Bush told reporters at the White House, saying he had
been invited to Sochi, where Putin has a holiday home. "President Putin has invited me to go to Sochi to discuss the strategic agreement, a crucial part of which is missile defense."
"We're optimistic we can reach an accord on some very important matters," he said.

Bush said the visit would take place after the April 2-4 NATO summit in Romania, which Putin is scheduled to attend for a meeting of the NATO-Russia Council. Bush is currently scheduled to visit Croatia immediately after the summit, so the Russian trip could follow that, but the president's advisers said details were still being worked out.

Russia welcomed Bush's decision to make the trip, probably his last opportunity to meet Putin in his home country before the Russian leader hands over power on May 7 to President-elect Dmitry Medvedev. Putin is expected to become prime minister in the new government.

"We are satisfied that the U.S. president has accepted an invitation issued earlier by President Putin to visit Sochi and discuss a wide range of issues at a working summit," Putin's top foreign policy adviser Sergei Prikhodko told Reuters.

Stephen Hadley, Bush's national security adviser, said the meeting would follow up on a recent visit by Defense Secretary Robert Gates and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, who talked to the Russians about a possible strategic agreement.

Hadley said the decision to meet was "an indication by the two leaders that there may be an opportunity here to provide a strategic framework for the relationship, identify areas of cooperation, resolve some outstanding issues so that the relationship is in good shape to be handed over to their respective successors."

Travelling Matters

Have been doing a lot of travelling these days.
Was in a rush this time, having a family urgency.
Anyways, I always think that a travel health insurance is really important when you are travelling, doesn't matter where, how long the duration is.
At least an insurance gives me a relief no matter where I'm going.

Watch out diabetic and hypertensive patients

An abstract I read from the news today :

Malaysians who self-treat diabetes or hypertension by buying over-the-counter medication run the risk of kidney failures, a specialist warned.

Consultant nephrologist Dr Goh Bak Leong said based on observations patients had the tendency to self-treat diabetes and hypertension after just one or two visits.

“Some patients may visit their doctors once or twice and then decide to buy their own medication instead of seeing their doctors on a regular basis.

“This lack of doctor's monitoring is dangerous. The conditions may worsen and the patients don't realise it.

“These patients need to see a doctor even when there are no symptoms because by the time symptoms are discovered it will be too late. It can be a stroke or heart failure or kidney failure,” said Dr Goh, who is also the organising chairman of the World Kidney Day 2008.

Moreover, patients needed to follow-up with their doctors so that the latter could find the best form of treatment or combination of treatments to keep the conditions under control if the initial medicine did not work, he said.

They needed a long-term treatment plan for the diseases, he added.
He said for hypertension, a patient needed to reach the desired or target pressure level of 130/80mmHg, while for diabetes the sugar level should be between 4 to 7mmol/l (for fasting blood sugar) to ensure the diseases do not destroy their vital organs.

On patients who go from one doctor to another thinking there is a cure for the diseases, Dr Goh said they have to know that there is no cure for these diseases but only control and slowing down the devastating effects.

“It is best to prevent the diseases from occurring and this can be achieved by having a healthy lifestyle,” he said.

Are you into Fashion?

How fashionable are you?

Haha, honestly speaking, I’m a dull guy with no sense of fashion at all. Basically I would buy my clothings only when I need it, not on a regular basis.

Do you know that now you can learn fashion in fashion schools in california? Another option is fashion schools in los angeles. They are all popular schools. If it was for me, I could have chosen this field, I can forget about having to study again.

Getting to study in a fashion school in california would definitely help a lot of people realising their dreams of becoming a top fashion designer.

Asia's Hottest Pop Star Jay Chou

This is the word that Jay uses most of the time, 'diao' . A lot of people doesn't really understand its meaning, some say its a rude and inappropriate word. What exactly does Jay mean by his 'diao' ?

DIAO
literal meaning: penis
colloquial meaning: cool / outrageous
Chinese character: 屌
Han Yu Pin Yin/Mandarin: diao3 - diao in third tone
Cantonese pronunciation: diu/dieu/diew (however you want to romanize it) - higher tone than Mandarin *note this is a swear word in Cantonese, so don't use it the way Jay does

Jay uses the word "diao" for the slang definition, meaning "cool". For his expression "diao bu diao", it basically just means "cool or what?".

If you'd like to read further, then have a look at this Time Asia article on Jay. You'll find a discussion on "diao" there.

I personally like the article on him, how did his teacher thought he was dumb. Idolmakers thought he was ugly. But Jay Chou has become Asia's hottest pop star!!

Haha, Elven thinks that the word diao is very inappropriate though, guess now this explains him everything

Handsome and pretty looking?

California cosmetic surgeon has become a common trend nowadays, from minor procedures of Botox injection to breast lift or reduction, reconstruction, these have made improvements to lifes of people.

For example, breast reduction : people choose to have breast reduction or breast lift for many reasons. Sometimes their breasts are large enough to cause unpleasant symptoms, such as neck pain, back pain, headaches or rashes under the breasts. Sometimes their breasts are out of proportion to the rest of their bodies, making clothes fit poorly or making them look heavier than they really are. Sometimes breasts change shape, get larger, or droop due to pregnancy and breast feeding

During your consultation at Beverly Hills breast augmentation, plastic surgeon will examine you and discuss recommendations for the breast reduction technique to yield the best results. The procedure is usually done as an outpatient, under general anesthesia administered by a physician anesthesiologist to minimize discomfort during the procedure. Most patients have very little pain following the surgery because long-acting local anesthetic is administered as part of the procedure. Most patients return to work about a week and a half after surgery. There may be some bruising for a week or so and some swelling following surgery

Cosmetic surgery travel also provides plastic surgeons, medical directors who were trained at the finest universities in the country and is the product of the most competitive and prestigious institutions, including popular medical centres and training centers for general surgery and plastic surgery training.

Blogging Tips for Beginners

I think a lot of people out there, including me are new to blogging, hope this helps a little. Read this article and find it quite useful.

Blog Traffic For Beginners. What is Traffic?

Traffic is one of the reasons that keeps bloggers motivated. Traffic is so valuable that it could mean your blog’s failure without it. For those who have just started blogging, building traffic is the second priority next to building great contents. But how exactly can a beginner generate traffic to his or her blog?

There are three possible sources of traffic for any blogs namely; search engines, referrals from other websites/blogs and or paid traffic. For beginners, which among the possible blog traffic sources is ideal? To answer this question, let’s first have an overview of each traffic sources.

Traffic From Search Engines

Most of the traffic in the blogosphere is generated by search engines. Search engines like Google, Windows Live, Ask etc. are widely used by the netizens to search for specific information. Search engines when used refers websites or blogs that potentially contain the information being searched. Because of the significant roles of search engines in building traffic to a blog or website, search engine optimization became an important element in successful blogging.

Unfortunately, for those who have just started blogging, traffic from search engines will increase as soon as necessary search engine optimizations are implemented. Search engine optimization is a long process and it continues to evolve depending on the changes made by the search engines themselves. Search engine optimization will be thoroughly discussed in the succeeding posts

Paid Traffic

For those who have the finance, paid traffic is a good and easy way to increase your blog’s traffic. However, since it’s paid, the cost increases depending on your traffic requirement. Adwords and Text Link Ads are some examples of companies that provides paid traffic services.
As beginners in blogging, I don’t encourage you to jump into buying traffic yet. Since your blog is relatively new, I assume that your blog has few content. I suggest that you build content for your blog first before you avail of any paid traffic services. This will ensure that your visitors will have sufficient articles to read when they visit your blog.

Traffic From Referrals

As I’ve said it before on my previous post, traffic referral from other blogs or websites is your best shot if you have just started blogging.
In order to increase blog traffic from referrals, links to your blog from other blogs or website should be made available. There are several ways to do this. Here are some of my previous articles you can read that provides you with good information on building traffic to your blog.

My computer is getting slower this days, obviously the 1GB of DDR2 RAM memory I bought 3 years ago isn’t going to be enough now.

From the very beginning of the SDRAM, RAM memory has evolved so fast, that there are HYPER RAM and DDR4 memory now.

Therefore, I’ll be hoping to upgrade my desktop to a faster speed, most probably a DDR3 RAM, how do you think guys?

Psychiatry is over!

Thank goodness the psychiatry cycle is over, have been so frustrated with going to such a far place, a 30-mins bus ride and with all the walkings

Can't really stand the lousy condition in the psych ward. Filthy dirty and all messed up, the place is stinky and old.. argh...

There are different types of patients there, with neurosis, psychosis, schizophrenic and mentally retarded.. Pity them to suffer from it genetically.. Unlike those in drug rehab they are not drug dependent a lot...but sometimes are given sedatives like benzodiazepine.

So, just pray hard for them.

Updates on Edison Chen's News

Two arrested for spreading celebrity sex photos in east China

JINAN, March 2 (Xinhua) -- Chinese police have arrested two more men in a nationwide crackdown on the distribution of sexually explicit photos featuring Hong Kong entertainer Edison Chen, police in east China's Shandong Province said on Sunday.

A 25-year-old man surnamed Wei was arrested on Feb. 12 for allegedly uploading 1,174 shots featuring Chen with female celebrities on to a chat room of the instant messenger QQ.com for downloads, according to the Internet supervision police brigade in Zibo City.

Wei allegedly provided links to the chat room at cbbn.bbs, a popular on-line forum, to canvas interest. Wei was detained and is awaiting trial.

The Zibo police said Wei confessed that he obtained the photos from another person outside Shandong when the pictures started to leak out.

The other man, surnamed Li, was given a ten-day detention and fined 3,000 yuan (420 U.S. dollars) on Feb. 15 for uploading more than 180 copies of the photos to his personal space at QQ.com.

Police in Tai'an, in Shandong, said Li, 21, provided links and codes to access the photos through his web page to solicit visits to increase its popularity.

The photos, reportedly copied by a computer repair shop assistant from a faulty laptop believed to belong to Chen, began to appear on the Internet from Jan. 27.

On Feb. 21, Chen made a public apology and announced that he would quit the Hong Kong entertainment industry. He admitted most of the photos were taken by him. "These photos were very private and have not been shown to people and were never intended to be shown to anyone."

Hong Kong police have been hunting for the first releaser of the photos and had made several arrests. At least 13 people have been arrested on the Chinese mainland in connection with the photos. Chinese law prohibits the production, duplication, selling or circulation of pornographic products even without the purpose of making profit. Offenders can face detention of up to 15 days.

Ten people who allegedly produced, sold or bought computer discs of the photos were arrested in the southern city of Shenzhen in February, when police confiscated about 250 discs and six computers used to produce the discs.

An 11th person, surnamed Yu, was detained for 10 days in Zhoushan City, Zhejiang Province, on Feb. 22. He was found to have downloaded 260 photos on his computer and uploaded the photos to the album of his QQ space to attract other Internet users.

On Saturday, police in the central China province of Hunan sentenced two men to five days detention for disseminating the explicit photos on the Internet.

Last month, the Chinese Internet search engine Baidu.com was asked by a Beijing Internet self-discipline organization to make a public apology for allowing the circulation of the photos.

Wow, better be careful with considering the consequences of those people who published the pics, guys I'm neutral, just want you guys to know the updates. Haha

New Cycle Coming !!

Having a new rotation this week, and the subject is Tropical Pathology.

Actually we call the rotations here as ‘cycles’, as a cycle means having to study the same subject for certain credit hours. Tropical pathology is fun, reminds me of studying somewhat similar, Pathological Anatomy back in 3rd Year.

The topic for today : Typhoid fever, Cholera and Dysentery. Never thought initially that Cholera can bring such high mortality. All I knew during childhood is that cholera is just diarrhea. As our lecturer explained, it could really bring serious complications.

drug treatment is actually not really effective. Prevention is the main line of management. People should be aware of contaminated food or water.

So, be careful with your hygiene^^

I Am a Foochow Boy

I am a foochow Chinese kid, yes I am, though some of my friends say that I don't look like one.

But I’m proud being foochow, with all the foochow blood running inside me.
One thing I cannot deny about Foochows are that they are really very careful with handling with money. Or in other words, we call that as Kiam Siap. Some people will sometimes find that irritating though. Hihi, but I think its important not to be spendthrift.

But another thing some Foochows should really change is their LOUD tone of voice. Gosh, I’ve got a foochow friend, a female some more, who speaks so loudly and you can even hear her from so faraway.

I’m not sure if she made it up to draw attention or is it just natural to her, even my neighbor agreed to that, he got so irritated with that voice. Haha !! Same thing applies to me, I should really lower down my voice and natural high.

Saw the news today : Foochow clansmen urged to back BN

MIRI: The Foochows in Malaysia must rally behind the Barisan Nasional as they owe their success in commerce and trade to the ruling government, said Foochow community leader Datuk Jimmy Law Hieng Wei.

Law, chairman of both the Malaysia Foochow Association and Sarawak Foochow Association, urged the Foochows – a powerful business community at state and national level – to throw their full weight behind Barisan on March 8.

His appeal to the Foochows should serve as a timely boost for the Chinese Barisan component parties, particularly the Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP), that are facing tough fights.

The Foochows, who control a big portion of commercial and industrial sectors ranging from ship-building to construction to supermarket chains, are powerful voters because they can swing the voting trend in favour of either the Barisan or the opposition in constituencies where they are the majority Chinese clan.

Law, who is the brother of former Science, Technology and Environment Minister Tan Sri Law Hieng Ding, is the vice-president of the Miri Foochow Association and holds many high-ranking posts in the Federation of Chinese Association and other Chinese-related community bodies in Miri, at state and national levels.

Speaking to various Chinese organisations here at a gathering on Monday, Law told the Foochows to “put aside the anger some of them have against certain Chinese party leaders”.
“Despite these anger and unhappiness, we Chinese are one big family. Whatever family problems we are facing do not change the fact that we are still a family.
“I appeal to all Foochows to put aside their personal feelings this elections and vote for the Barisan and for SUPP," he said.

The votes from the Foochows may prove decisive in several key urban constituencies like Bandar Kuching, Sibu, Lanang, Sarikei and even here, aside from other constituencies in peninsula states and in Sabah where there are large number of Foochows.
