Merdeka!!

Its our National Day Celebration today!! Malaysia is now 51 years old.

A united people is the anchor to stability, harmony.

The true test of a country and its people is how its people react when the country is faced with trying times, said Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.

The Prime Minister said Malaysia was never free from challenges and obstacles but alhamdulillah (Thank God) each one was successfully overcome.

"Not did we overcome every one of the obstacles, but more than that, we have successfully developed the country to a level that we can be proud of.

"I am also confident and believe that we can again overcome every test that we are currently facing if we stand together, work hand in hand, with a strong determination and commitment to carry out our responsibilities.

"It is my desire that every Malaysian is able to truly inculcate and realise how important unity is among us all," he said Saturday in his 51st Merdeka Day address which was telecast over local TV stations.

He said a united people was the anchor that determined political stability, social harmony and economic resilience.

Abdullah noted that after the March 8 general election, the country had to deal with a food crisis and the fuel hike that caused the price of basic goods to rise as well as a higher inflation rate.

"All these are huge challenges to us and it might raise a lot of question and concern among the people as to whether we would be able to handle the situation.

"We will continue to combat the problem of rising prices and inflation in the best possible way. The Government is always concerned about the burden of the people, especially those who are poor and of a lower income group and those who are less fortunate," he said.

He added that the Government would continue to take measures when needed, and in any case it has already embarked on a number of initiatives to help the people adjust and to ease their financial burden.

Among them, he said, were measures he announced in his 2009 Budget speech on Friday, which includes extending and improving the social safety net and making more people more eligible to receive welfare assistance based on the current poverty level.

He said 110,000 households were now eligible for aid which was a two-fold increase, while the Government too would reduce the red tape so that people would get aid without too much bureaucracy.

He said the Government would also ensure adequate food supply at reasonable prices and food stock supply, more incentives to farmers and fishermen to increase supply and at the same time the Government would continue to provide subsidies for essential food items such as rice, flour, cooking oil and bread.

"Definitely, the Government will try all it can to ensure that the people's quality of life can be maintained as best possible even in today's challenging global economy," he added.

Abdullah said he was confident that the country was today on the right track to becoming a developed country, and that it would be able to compete and hold its own among other developed nations.

Other than economic achievements and reducing the gap between the rich and poor, he said, the Government had also focused on improving noble values such as integrity, a more open media, and strengthening institutions like the parliament, judiciary, the Anti-Corruption Agency, the police and the civil service.

"The Government cannot realise all these goals on its own. It really needs support from all parties, from the private sector, NGOs and especially the Malaysian public," he said.

Abdullah also said that the world really respected and was in awe of Malaysia because not many countries in the world with such a mix of races, could live together peacefully and harmoniously with full tolerance.

He nevertheless said the country still had a long way to go and there was still much that needed to be done.

"We want to be a developed country in our own mould; a developed country that promises a bright future for every one of its citizens without discrimination against race, religion and background.

"This is not impossible if each one of us unites and sets aside differences, prejudice and rises up as a people who have the resilience to face all enemies and challenges," he said.

Diplomacy steps in as Russian troops in Georgia

TBILISI (Reuters) - Russian troops remain in parts of Georgia and reports of looting continue as U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice visits Georgia on Friday to secure Tbilisi's signature to a French-brokered peace deal with Moscow.

Russia clashes with ally and NATO aspirant Georgia strained further Moscow's ties with Washington, leading U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates to warn U.S. relationship with Russia could be "adversely affected for years to come" unless the Kremlin rethought its "aggressive posture" in Georgia.

President Dmitry Medvedev in Sochi, near Georgia's border, to urge Russia to embrace diplomacy in its showdown with its small neighbour to avoid a serious rift with the West.

The flurry of diplomatic activity aimed to restore peace in the Caucasus -- a key route for exporting Caspian oil to the West -- takes place as Moscow is under mounting international pressure to end its occupation of chunks of Georgian land.

Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili said he would need to "take a closer look" at the peace proposal before signing it.

"We have to see what she (Rice) has to bring," he told CNN late on Thursday.

Russian troops have occupied parts of Georgia since repelling a Georgian attack last week on the tiny separatist territory of South Ossetia, which threw off Tbilisi's rule in the 1990s.

Russian soldiers and armour were seen on Thursday moving in or around the key Georgian town of Gori, west of Tbilisi. There were numerous signs of looting, which locals blamed on North Ossetian militias.

Witnesses said Russian tanks had rolled through the Black Sea port of Poti on Thursday morning, accompanying trucks with troops to the port area. A large column of Russian troops was seen in the western town of Zugdidi, not far from the second pro-Moscow separatist region of Abkhazia.

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said on Thursday he was "extremely concerned" about the humanitarian situation in Georgia and called for a halt to lawlessness.

Saakashvili said Russia was behind a "deliberate policy of ethnic cleansing".

Earlier this week Georgia asked the United Nations' highest court, the International Court of Justice, to issue an urgent order to Russia to halt what it describes as human rights violations on ethnic Georgians.

TROOPS PULL-OUT, INTEGRITY

French President Nicolas Sarkozy, the architect of a three-day old ceasefire, said Saakashvili's signature to the six-point peace deal would "consolidate" the halt to fighting and lead to the withdrawal of Russian troops.

But Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said: "We can forget about talks on Georgia's territorial integrity because it's impossible to force South Ossetia and Abkhazia to agree that they can be returned into Georgia's fold by force".

Mentioning Georgia's territorial integrity in any document settling the conflict would be seen by people as "the deepest insult", he added in a radio interview.

Russia has said the case of Kosovo, a breakaway province of Serbia whose self-proclaimed independence was promptly recognised by major Western powers, creates a legal precedent for Georgia's separatist South Ossetia and Abkhazia.

"Georgia is a member of the United Nations, as such it has internationally recognized borders, therefore the territorial integrity of Georgia within those borders is not an issue," White House spokeswoman Dana Perino said in comments to Lavrov's remarks.

"Georgia's borders have been reaffirmed by numerous Security Council resolutions," she said. "So the question of Abkhazia and South Ossetia will be the subject of international negotiations as they have been at the U.N. Security Council," Perino said.

"The resolution of Kosovo's status is covered by a U.N. Security Council resolution and that resolution envisions an international process," she said. "So the two cases are totally different."

In a move likely to sour further Russia's ties with the U.S., Poland finally agreed on Thursday to host elements of U.S. global anti-missile system on its land after Washington improved the terms of the deal amid the Georgia crisis.

Russia views the planned U.S. anti-missile shield in Eastern Europe as a threat to its national security.

Flirting Skills

Are you always stuck being a single? Having problems flirting? Now you can improve this all.

Basically and frankly speaking, as a medical student here, we don’t get the chance to flirt at all. The reason is that, first, I’m here in Russia, unless you speak fluent Russian (which I think is quite impossible for me) , you can’t really flirt with a Russian chick. Haha.

China Rules

Just watched the basketball match between USA and China. Not disappointing at all for me, China did well against the best team in the world, making the lowest 31 points difference in their previous meetings.

Yao Ming did a good job, with his knee injury not fully recovered. Hope they will do better in the next games against Spain Angola and Greece.

Myopia in Children

Technology may be good a thing but it might not portend well for our children’s eyesight.

YOU’VE probably heard this from your parents and you may have used it on your children too: finish your carrots if you want good eyesight. Truth is, no amount of carrots, vitamins or therapy will prevent your child from having to wear spectacles if his vision is impaired.

Usually it is the schoolteacher who picks up on the child’s vision problems and reports it to the parents.

“Parents bring their children to see me when they complain they cannot see the blackboard or get headaches,” says W.S. Lee of Bangsar Optometry in Kuala Lumpur.

In most cases, it’s a case of myopia, also known as short-sightedness, a refractive defect of the eye in which the light entering the eye focuses in front of the retina instead of directly on it.

Ophthalmologist Dr Chin Pik Kee says about 25% of her patients are below 12 years old and they come to her for common problems like refractive errors (especially myopia and astigmatism), eyelid infections (stye, chalazion), allergic conjunctivitis, eye itch, squint and eye injuries.

In 2003, a study in the Gombak area of Kuala Lumpur was conducted by consultant opthalmologist Dr Goh Pik Pin, together with a team of researchers from the Health Ministry and Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. The results showed that the majority of children who did wear glasses, was mostly for myopia, with or without astigmatism.

The survey on 1,752 schoolchildren between the ages of seven and nine revealed that 31% of Chinese and 13% of Indian kids in the survey have myopia, compared to about 9% of the Malay students.

Astigmatism (inability of the optics of the eye to focus due to an irregular cornea) ranged from as low as 9% for Malays to as high as 31% for the Chinese.

There were some variations with race and environment. For instance, in a similar study in Singapore between 1999 and 2001 on 1,962 schoolchildren, the incidence of myopia was reported at 22% for Malays, 40% for Chinese and 34% for Indians. Astigmatism averaged at more than 40% for all three races.

Lee, however, feels there is no scientific evidence to prove a direct link between genetic or environmental factors, and vision impairment.

“When I looked around my daughter’s primary school, there were maybe less than 70% of schoolchildren wearing glasses.”

On the other hand, Joyce Ng from Perfect Vision, an optometrist for 18 years, noticed that more schoolchildren are wearing glasses.

“When I first started, maybe one in 10 children needed prescription glasses. Now it’s more like four out of 10,” says Ng, who sees an average of 25 children or more per month.

She also observed that myopia among the Chinese was the highest.
“Maybe it has something to do with the way children are taught in school nowadays, especially those in the Chinese stream. They are required to read and write a lot, and perhaps the position they adopt is not good for the eyes.

“There have been studies that show that excessive usage stresses the eye muscle, causing myopia at a faster rate,” she suggests, adding that many of her young customers (in primary school) start at an average of 2.00 diopters.

“Only in rare instances, pathological or degenerative myopia characterised by very high degrees of myopia that’s often hereditary or familial, can lead to blindness. This is not due to the myopic power per se, but because of associated retinal degeneration and other sight-threatening complications. In this situation, normal vision cannot be achieved even with the use of spectacles.”

Transfer proposal for hysteria-hit students

Parents and guardians of the 35 SMK Tanjung Lumpur students affected by hysteria since May have been given a choice of transferring the children to another school.

State education director Abdul Aziz Abdul Latif said three other students who were affected were doing fine in their new schools.

“They are not experiencing spells of hysteria like they did when they were in SMK Tanjung Lumpur,” he added.

He said the parents and guardians of the 35 students were responsive about the transfer proposal and would inform the department of their decision on Monday. “It (the transfer) can be temporary or permanent. We allow them to make the decision,” he said when contacted here Friday.

Abdul Aziz said the department was concerned as nine of the students were in Form Three and two in Form Five and they would be taking the Penilaian Menengah Rendah (PMR) and Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examinations.

On whether the hysteria had affected the rest of the 700-odd students, Abdul Aziz said they were continuing with their lessons and have meals during recess like normal while the teachers go about their routine duties.

“Even when the students suffered hysteria, the rest of the school continued as usual. There was minimum disturbance and some teachers were asked to help calm the affected ones,” he added.

Among the steps the school has taken to prevent further incidents were to hold special religious recitals and prayers and engaging a bomoh (shaman) to “cleanse” the school.

Important Certificate

Its time for the first interview for my best friend, Kenny. Kenny went for a job interview yesterday. He spent almost a whole day there. When he's back from his interview, I asked him how was the interview and why took him so long.

He said there are over hundreds of people attended the interview. Its freaking amazing so many people went for the job. He spent the whole day sitting there waiting for his turn.

Although there are a few interviewers and most of the interview took less than 5 minutes interviewing the candidates, he still need to wait for a long time.

The thing is, the interview took 30 minutes to complete, and the interviewer asked if he had a Cisco certification. Thank goodness he actually had that certificate. Now that everyone knows how important that certificate and skill is. Well, its never too late. There is still time to make a choice, not necessarily a career change but a chance to fortify my technical knowledge by getting valuable training from Cisco.

With today's wildly growing career opportunities within the IT field, getting Cisco certified is definitely the right path to that career that can change ones life. If you are as interested as I am in harnessing a technical career and bring additional value to your career growth, you can visit their site to learn more about their valuable trainings and different levels of certification programs, which are globally accepted.

Important to recycle unwanted cellphones

Although between 65% and 80% of a handphone can be recycled, recovery rates remain dismal due to poor awareness among consumers, according to cellphone manufacturer Nokia.

A survey by Nokia of 6,500 people in 13 countries shows that only 3% have recycled their handphones, 74% have not even thought of doing so and 70% do not know where to.

“If each of the three billion handphone users globally recycle one phone each, we can save 240,000 tonnes of raw material from being mined, produced and distributed," said Francis Cheong, Nokia South-East Asia and Pacific environmental affairs manager.

“The amount of greenhouse gases saved would be equivalent to that of removing four million cars from the road,” he said.

In that vein, Nokia is redoubling its efforts to make it easier for consumers to recycle mobile phones. It has set up kiosks in public places here for consumers to drop off their old or unused handphones for recycling.

To reward those who do so, Nokia will plant a tree in their name at Sebangau National Park in central Kalimantan.

Also, in a unique integration of services, the kiosks will accept handphones for servicing and repairs.

“The new kiosks are part of our ongoing commitment to environmental responsibility and one way in which we can make it easier for people to recycle their used and unwanted mobiles in a responsible manner,” said Cheong during the launch of the programme recently.

As a start, four Integrated Nokia Kiosks have been set up in the Klang Valley — at Nokia stores in The Gardens Mid Valley City, The Curve, Suria KLCC and Giant Hypermarket in Bandar Puchong Kinrara. More will be added nationwide later on.

The recycling programme accepts handphones of all makes, as well as accessories such as headsets, batteries and battery chargers. Dropping handphones off at the kiosks is simple; one need only follow instructions on the touchscreen.

The collected handphones will be sent to two recyclers, in Penang and Singapore. Recoverable materials include plastics and metals such as gold, silver, copper, iron, chromium, lead and nickel.

Getting facial

The thing I hate most are blackheads on my face. They are so ugly and a big fuss.

A blackhead is basically an enlarged hair follicle which gets filled with dead skin cells, bacteria, and oil.

This is often capped by a blackened mass of skin debris, from which it gets its name,
blackheads often form because of excess of oil secreted by glands in the skin.

This oil is natural and necessary to protect and lubricate the skin, but when excess dead skin cells are present, this can block the flow of oil and cause the build-up which turns into blackheads and other forms of acne.
